What is professional teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that lightens the natural colour of your teeth using a peroxide-based gel. The gel releases oxygen molecules that pass into the enamel and break apart the stain compounds trapped inside it — lightening the tooth from within rather than scrubbing the surface.
That distinction matters. Whitening toothpastes and cleaning remove surface stain. Professional whitening changes the intrinsic shade of the tooth, which is why the results are so much more noticeable.
At Mera Dental Clinic in Delhi, in-clinic whitening takes about 45 to 60 minutes and typically brightens teeth by several shades in a single visit, with results you can see the same day.
Why teeth become discoloured
Extrinsic stains — on the surface
- Tea and coffee — the most common culprits by far.
- Tobacco in any form: cigarettes, gutkha, paan and paan masala, which stain deeply and quickly.
- Red wine, dark fizzy drinks, turmeric and other strongly coloured foods.
- Plaque and tartar, which hold stain against the tooth.
Intrinsic stains — inside the tooth
- Ageing. Enamel thins over decades and the yellower dentine beneath shows through more.
- Tetracycline antibiotics taken during tooth development, which cause banded grey or brown discolouration.
- Excess fluoride during development (fluorosis), giving white or brown mottling.
- Trauma, which can darken a single tooth.
- Root-treated teeth, which often darken over the years.
Surface stains respond superbly to whitening. Intrinsic stains respond variably — deep tetracycline banding may need veneers rather than bleaching. We will tell you honestly which category yours falls into and what result to realistically expect.
Your whitening options
In-clinic whitening
The fastest and most controlled option. A protective barrier is placed over the gums, a high-concentration gel is applied to the teeth, and it is activated and refreshed over two or three cycles. One appointment, immediate results, and because we control the whole process, sensitivity is managed properly.
Take-home whitening kits
Custom trays made from impressions of your teeth, with a lower-concentration gel used at home for a set period each day over one to two weeks. Slower, but very effective, gentler on sensitivity, and the trays can be re-used for top-ups later.
Combination approach
In-clinic whitening for an immediate jump in shade, followed by take-home trays to fine-tune and maintain. This gives the best and longest-lasting results for most patients.
Internal bleaching
For a single dark tooth that has had root canal treatment, whitening gel is placed inside the tooth over one or more visits, lightening it from within to match its neighbours.
What happens during in-clinic whitening
- Examination first. We check for decay, leaking fillings, cracks and gum disease. Whitening over untreated decay or exposed dentine causes real pain, so anything found is treated first.
- Professional cleaning. A scaling and polish removes plaque, tartar and surface stain. This alone often lightens teeth noticeably, and it lets the gel work evenly.
- Recording your starting shade against a standard shade guide, so the change is measured rather than imagined.
- Protecting the soft tissues. A resin barrier is applied along the gumline and the lips and cheeks are retracted, so the gel contacts only enamel.
- Applying the whitening gel to the front surfaces of the teeth.
- Activation cycles. The gel is left for a set time, removed and reapplied, usually across two or three cycles within the appointment.
- Rinsing and final shade check. The barrier is removed, teeth are rinsed, and we compare against your starting shade so you can see exactly what changed.
- Aftercare advice, including the important first 48 hours.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Professionally supervised whitening is safe and well evidenced. The gel does not soften, weaken or "strip" enamel when used correctly — a persistent myth. What it does do is temporarily open the microscopic pores in enamel, which is why sensitivity can occur and why the first 48 hours matter for staining.
The risks worth knowing about are mostly associated with unsupervised whitening: over-the-counter kits with ill-fitting trays that leak gel onto the gums, unregulated products of unknown concentration, and salon or market whitening carried out by people with no dental training and no ability to diagnose what is actually causing the discolouration. Chemical burns to the gums are not rare in those settings.
Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children with developing teeth.
Sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity to cold is the most common side effect, affecting a proportion of patients for one to three days. It resolves on its own. We reduce it by applying desensitising agents, adjusting gel strength and timing, and recommending a desensitising toothpaste in the days before and after. Tell us if you already have sensitive teeth — we will plan around it.
How long do results last?
Typically one to three years, depending almost entirely on habits. Heavy tea, coffee, tobacco or paan use will shorten it considerably; moderate consumption and good hygiene extend it.
Making it last:
- The first 48 hours are critical. Enamel pores are temporarily open and teeth stain very easily. Avoid tea, coffee, red wine, cola, turmeric-rich curries, tomato-based dishes, beetroot, soy sauce, berries and all tobacco.
- Afterwards, use a straw for cold staining drinks where practical.
- Rinse with water after tea, coffee or coloured foods.
- Brush twice daily and clean between teeth.
- Keep six-monthly cleanings, which remove new surface stain before it accumulates.
- Top up with take-home trays occasionally rather than repeating a full in-clinic session.
- Stop tobacco. Nothing stains teeth faster, and nothing else you do will have a comparable effect.
What whitening cannot do
Being straight with patients about limits prevents disappointment:
- It does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, bridges or veneers. These stay exactly the shade they were made. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, whitening first and then replacing them to match the new shade is the correct sequence — worth planning and budgeting for.
- Deep tetracycline staining may lighten only partially. Veneers are often the better answer.
- It does not fix chips, gaps, crowding or shape. Those need bonding, veneers or orthodontics.
- Results vary between individuals. Yellowish teeth generally whiten very well; greyish teeth respond less predictably.
- Teeth have a natural limit. A healthy natural white is the target, not a fluorescent one — and a shade that suits your face looks far better than the whitest possible.
Cost of teeth whitening

Frequently asked questions
How long does teeth whitening take?
In-clinic whitening takes about 45 to 60 minutes in a single appointment. Take-home kits work over one to two weeks of daily use.
Does whitening damage enamel?
No. Professionally supervised whitening does not weaken or strip enamel. It temporarily opens the microscopic pores in enamel, which is why sensitivity can occur and why staining foods should be avoided for 48 hours.
How many shades whiter will my teeth get?
Most patients see several shades of improvement in one in-clinic session. The exact result depends on the type of staining — yellowish teeth respond best, greyish teeth less predictably.
Will whitening make my crowns and fillings white too?
No. Crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour. If you have visible restorations on front teeth, whiten first and then replace them to match your new shade.
Is whitening painful?
Not painful, though temporary cold sensitivity for one to three days is common. We use desensitising agents and can adjust the gel strength and timing if you have sensitive teeth.
How long do the results last?
Usually one to three years, depending on your diet and habits. Tea, coffee, tobacco and paan shorten it considerably. Occasional top-ups with take-home trays maintain the result.
Can I whiten at home with a kit from a shop?
You can, but results are limited and ill-fitting trays leak gel onto the gums, which can cause burns. Custom-made trays from the clinic fit properly and use professional-strength gel safely.
Can whitening be done during pregnancy?
It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is a purely cosmetic procedure, so there is no reason not to wait.
What can I eat after whitening?
For 48 hours, avoid tea, coffee, red wine, cola, turmeric-heavy curries, tomato sauces, beetroot, soy sauce, berries and tobacco. Stick to lighter-coloured foods such as rice, chicken, curd, pasta and white bread.
Can one dark tooth be whitened?
Yes. A single tooth darkened after root canal treatment can be lightened from the inside with internal bleaching, or covered with a veneer or crown.
